The Renaissance
The Renaissance was a period of time that is known as the rebirth of writing, art, and thought. The Renaissance started in Italy and eventually spread to all parts of Europe. The Renaissance was from about A.D. 1300-1600 and was a time of growth for cities and in trade, there were new styles and new ways of thinking. Florence, Italy, was one of the most important places of trade because of its location along the Arno River, and the fact that it had a huge, and growing, population.
Some of the most famous sculptors and artists from the Renaissance included Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian. Da Vinci originally studied to be an artist, but was also very talented in anatomy, astronomy, and geometry making him a true Renaissance Man. His most famous paintings include The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. Another famous painter was Michelangelo. He created the sculpture Moses, as well as the paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Raphael studied da Vinci’s and other great artists' work. He also painted The School of Athens. One more of the many famous Renaissance painters was Titian, who introduced bright colors and bold strokes in art, he was well known for lush landscapes and adding texture to his portaits. These artists are well known and revered today, their paintings and sculptures are in the most famous museums in the world and people from around the world travel great distances to view them.
We have great advancements today because of the people in the Renaissance who studied and learned and experimented, people who were not afraid to try new things and think differently and to think about many different subjects. Advancements in this time period include understanding and identifying human anatomy, bold art, and huge discoveries in science. None of these could have happened if the dark ages did not come to an end causing a “rebirth” for civilization.
